How to read the chart

Each row of this hex table is one byte. The hex column is the fastest way in: its first digit picks a group of sixteen and its second digit the place within it, so 4A sits in the 4x group, ten rows down. The binary column splits the byte into its two nibbles, and each nibble is exactly one of the hex digits.

The first 128 rows are ASCII, defined in 1963, written up for networks in RFC 20 and still the base of every common encoding. Rows 128 to 255 follow ISO 8859-1, Latin-1, which is also how Unicode numbers its first 256 code points; the Unicode C1 Controls and Latin-1 Supplement chart shows the same range. Windows-1252 differs in the 128–159 range, so text from older Windows software may show curly quotes or € where this chart lists control codes. The control-code names in the Char column are the Unicode name aliases.

Patterns that save a lookup

  • The digits 0–9 are 30–39, so a digit’s value is its code minus 30.
  • Capital letters start at 41 and lowercase at 61. The two cases differ by one bit, 20, which is why c ^ 0x20 toggles case in ASCII.
  • Control codes fill 00–1F; Ctrl plus a letter on a keyboard sends that letter’s code with the top bits cleared, so Ctrl-M is 0D, carriage return.
  • In Latin-1, many lowercase accented letters are their capital form plus 20 as well: C9 É and E9 é.
A 16 by 16 grid of every byte from 00 to FF, rows labelled by the first hex digit and columns by the second.
Every byte from 00 to FF: row = first hex digit, column = second.

Questions people ask

What is the binary representation of 255?

11111111, eight ones. 255 is FF in hex and 377 in octal, the largest number one byte can hold.

What is the hex code for the letter A?

Capital A is 41 in hex, 65 in decimal and 01000001 in binary; lowercase a is 61. Every capital letter differs from its lowercase form by exactly 20 hex, which is 32.

What are bytes 128 to 159?

In ISO 8859-1 and Unicode they are the C1 control codes, such as NEL (85, next line) and CSI (9B, control sequence introducer), not printable characters. Windows-1252 puts printable characters such as € in most of that range instead.

What is 7F in the chart?

7F is 127, the DEL (delete) control character and the last ASCII code. It is also the largest value of a signed byte.
